Tinubu to EFCC: You Have Justified My Confidence in You
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the efforts and performance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in tackling economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption in the country, stressing that the Commission has justified the confidence reposed in it.
He gave the commendation on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Awka, Anambra State, at the commissioning of a new EFCC Zonal Directorate. The President pointed out that there was evidence of the Commission’s success in convictions, recoveries, and other landmark achievements.

Represented by Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tinubu noted that “supporting the EFCC is not particularly difficult. The agency has consistently demonstrated that the confidence reposed in it is well-founded. Without mincing words, the evidence of the EFCC’s success speaks loudly in convictions secured, assets and properties recovered.”
He affirmed that the Commission’s strides were in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.
“When we came in three years ago, I highlighted nine major focal areas of my administration. Two of which are reforming the economy for sustained and inclusive growth and promotion of good governance. The anti-graft agency complements this agenda, as it is focused on accountability and transparency and the appropriate deployment of resources,” he said.
At the commissioning, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, restated the Commission’s commitment to preventive frameworks in tackling economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption in the country.
According to him, the Commission would continue to focus on making corrupt practices difficult by blocking avenues through which they could occur.

“This new Directorate will not only enforce the law professionally and courageously, it will be high on corruption prevention. It will engage government institutions, businesses, financial institutions, professional bodies, schools, markets, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, religious bodies and communities. It will educate stakeholders, build relationships and mobilise the people to own the fight against all forms of corrupt practices in the zone,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that the EFCC would not relent in the pursuit of its mandate, recalling the Commission’s achievements over the last 34 months and describing them as impressive progress.
“The pursuit of our mandate has been our dominant engagement and in the past few years, we have made impressive progress. Between October 2023 and July 2026, the Commission received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court and secured 10,872 convictions. This gives a conviction-to-filing ratio of 75.1 per cent. In the first half of 2026 alone, we recorded 1,370 convictions from 1,889 filings. The Commission also recorded recoveries of ₦1,233,612,040,411.11, $684,478,457.32, £373,905.78 and €9,343,803.66, in addition to recoveries in other currencies,” he said.
He noted that, at the institutional level, the Commission had implemented significant reforms that were yielding results, with consequential improvements in its processes and procedures. He said these reforms partly explained the impact the EFCC had made and would continue to make across all areas of law enforcement.
“Reforms that have strengthened the Commission during the period include new guidelines on arrest and bail, a review of sting operations, the establishment of the Department of Fraud Risk Assessment and Control, the Security Department, the Immigration and Visa Section and the Cybercrime Rapid Response Centre,” he said.
While urging Ndi Anambra to engage in whistleblowing, the anti-graft czar said the Commission had established channels through which members of the public could submit petitions and provide information. He noted that the Commission’s Eagle Eye App allows citizens to provide details of suspected wrongdoing while making the provision of an informant’s personal details optional.
“However, whistleblowing must be responsible and based on facts. It must not become an instrument for settling scores,” he said.
He further said that Anambra and Imo States deserved an effective and responsive institutional presence, as they were renowned for enterprise, innovation, commerce, and an extraordinary culture of industry. He added that these legitimate activities must be protected from fraud, cybercrime, money laundering, investment fraud, diversion of public resources, and other forms of economic and financial crimes.
“Therefore, our coming to Awka is beyond geographical expansion. It is about taking the mandate of the EFCC closer to the people and closer to the economic activities we are meant to protect,” he said.
In their remarks, the governors of Anambra and Imo States, Professor Chukwuma Soludo and Senator Hope Uzodinma, respectively, said they were pleased with the activities and management of the EFCC under Olukoyede’s leadership. They pledged their support to the Commission as it opened a new Zonal Directorate in their domain.

The commissioning of the new Directorate attracted a massive turnout of distinguished Nigerians, including members of the National Assembly, representatives of civil society organisations, community leaders, students, and members of the media, among others.

FBI Commends Olukoyede, EFCC for Support in Tackling Sextortion, Cybercrime
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has commended the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, and the Commission for their efforts and vital role in Operation Artemis, a joint international effort to disrupt financially motivated sextortion networks targeting minors.
The commendation was conveyed in a letter signed by FBI Director Kash Patel, who praised the Commission for its collaboration with the Bureau in the arrest and extradition of suspects facing federal charges in the United States.
In the letter addressed to Olukoyede, Patel acknowledged the Commission’s contribution to the operation, stating that “the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has played a vital role in Operation Artemis, a joint effort focused on disrupting financially motivated sextortion rings targeting juveniles.”
He said that, under Olukoyede’s leadership, the EFCC designated personnel to support the investigations and facilitate the transfer of suspects from Nigeria to face prosecution in the United States.
Specifically, the FBI Director commended the EFCC for apprehending Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudashiru Afeez Olawale, who were indicted in the United States in 2023 over allegations relating to the sexual exploitation and extortion of minors.
The two suspects were extradited to the United States in August 2026, with the EFCC facilitating the process following investigations and extradition proceedings. They are facing federal charges relating to sexual exploitation in cases involving the deaths of minors.
Patel noted that the successful outcome of the cases would not have been possible without the EFCC’s assistance and commitment to international law enforcement cooperation.
“The successful outcome of these cases would not have been possible without your assistance and dedication to international law enforcement collaboration,” he said.
The FBI Director further expressed appreciation to Olukoyede and the Commission for their commitment to justice and continued cooperation, while expressing optimism about strengthening the partnership between both agencies.
“Please accept my sincere appreciation for your commitment to justice and steadfast cooperation. I look forward to the continued partnership with the EFCC,” he stated in the letter.
The extradition of Adekunle and Olawale followed FBI investigations into separate sextortion schemes targeting male minors in the United States. The investigations linked the alleged activities to two teenage victims who died by suicide after being subjected to online sexual exploitation and extortion.

Justice O. O. Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, sentenced a former banker, Christopher Jackson Edeh, to a total of 39 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in a ₦2.7 billion fraud prosecuted by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Edeh, who was arraigned on February 28, 2024, faced nine counts bordering on fraudulent false accounting and unauthorised access to a computer system.
The charges alleged that he altered the bank account details of several customers and government-related entities, including the Kano State Government Power Intervention Fund, NNPC Trading Limited, Stallion Vision Ltd, the Lagos State Government Blue Line, the State Contributory Pension Account and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, with intent to defraud.
During the trial, prosecuting counsel, Z. B. Atiku, called three witnesses and tendered several documents in evidence to establish the case against the defendant. The defence, in turn, called one witness.
In her judgment, Justice Abike-Fadipe held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently convicted Edeh on all nine counts.
The court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment without an option of fine on each of counts one to seven, bordering on fraudulent false accounting, and two years’ imprisonment without an option of fine on each of counts eight and nine, relating to unauthorised access to a computer system with intent to facilitate the commission of crimes.
The court ordered that all the sentences run concurrently.
